I tried to reboot my computer in safe mode using WMC 2005. I could not. I received an error message stating that the file, "hal.dll" was missing. Not sure if it is or not. Did find it on a search. This is partially what the file says, [PCILOCK TIMERES CLKLVL USE8254 INTAFFINITY MAXPROCSPERCLUSTER USEPMTIMER FORCERESETREG
HAL: This HAL.DLL requires an MPS version 1.1 system
Replace HAL.DLL with the correct hal for this system
The system is halting HAL: No RTC device interrupt
Machine Check Exception pending, MCE exceptions not enabled

Computer Expert- -hal.dll missing?
Your HAL.DLL could be missing or corupt. Boot from boot disk to a command prompt.
From the MS-DOS "C:\%26gt;" prompt quickly determine if your computer has the "hal.dll" file by typing "dir hal.dll /s" at the prompt. If the computer returns a "File not found" message, the hal.dll has been deleted.
To recover this file boot the Windows operating system CD and choose the option to "restore", "repair", or "recover". This option will prompt you for the Windows installation to use, the administrators password and will allow you to restore the proper file. At the MS-DOS prompt type the below command.
expand x:\i386\hal.dl_ y:\windows\system32\
(x being your cd-rom drive and y being your c drive.)

Reply:google that filename.
Reply:Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what hal.dll is used for.
In any case, if you have your windows disc handy you can update your system files. In the command window just type sfc.exe /scannow
that will launch a program which checks the integrity of your system files and rewrites any that are corrupted. It will prompt for a windows disc if it needs to write any so you'll need a copy nearby.
Beyond that a quick google turns up this site.

they offere a free download but I try to avoid any 3rd party sites offering system files if possible. If you got the windows disc, I would trust that. If not, maybe give these clowns a shot

Reply:Hal.dll stands for Hardware abstraction layer. It's a criticall .dll file that contains the hardware information on your computer. You can think of it like an running inventory for windows. What you may need to do is:
Perform a repair installation. here a link http://www.windowsreinstall.com/
